About Albany

Albany sits on the west bank of the Hudson River, about 150 miles north of New York City. It has been the capital of New York State since 1797 and is one of the oldest surviving European settlements from the original thirteen colonies. Dutch traders built Fort Orange here in 1624, and the city received its charter in 1686.

Today the skyline is anchored by the Empire State Plaza, with its marble towers, reflecting pools and the distinctive egg-shaped performing arts center. Next door stands the New York State Capitol, a grand stone building that took more than 30 years to complete.
